Formenton will not return to the Ottawa Senators, GM says

Alex Formenton will not return to the Ottawa Senators organization when he is eligible to play in the NHL in December.

Formenton one was one of five players acquitted of sexual assault charges stemming from an incident in London, Ont. in 2018 when they were members of Canada’s world junior hockey team.

The NHL said the five players will be eligible to sign contracts on Oct. 15 but will be suspended until Dec. 1.

Senators general manager Steve Staios says he spoke with Formenton’s agent.

“We engaged in discussions with the agent and, I think, both sides agree that it would be best for everybody for a fresh start for Alex,” Staios told reporters at Canadian Tire Centre on Wednesday.

When asked if the fresh start for Formenton meant not with the Senators organization, Staios said, “correct.”

Staios said he did not speak with Formenton.

Formenton last played for the Senators during the 2021-22 season. He had 18 goals and 14 assists in 79 games played during the 2021-22 season.

The 26-year-old has signed a contract with HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland.

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Danny Briere said Tuesday Carter Hart told the team it was “better for them to look for a fresh start” with a new club.
