Stove fire at ByWard Market restaurant

A stove fire in the kitchen of the Lone Star Texas Grill in Ottawa's ByWard Market was extinguished Friday morning. Nick DeFazio describes the response.

There are no reports of injuries after a kitchen fire at a ByWard Market restaurant sent smoke billowing over the Ottawa tourist area.

Firefighters responded to a call for a fire in a commercial building in the 100 block of George Street, at Dalhousie Street, just before 10 a.m.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick DeFazio said the fire started in the stove at the Lone Star Texas Grill, and the flames spread up the back wall and the vent.

“It had spread up through a vent system, so we set up a ladder on scene as well,” DeFazio said.

“Crews went on the roof and were extinguishing it, both from the top of the roof down into the vent, as well as from inside up through the vent. Firefighters did great work. They contain the fire to the vent system and to the stove.”

Smoke was seen coming from the top floor and the roof of the building. DeFazio said the fire was contained to the stove.

An Ottawa Public Health inspector will be on scene to inspect the kitchen.
