Fire damages home in Ottawa’s rural south end

A fire that gutted a house on Snake Island Road is being investigated by police. CTV’s Stefan Keyes reports.

Investigators are searching for the cause of an early morning fire that destroyed a home in Ottawa’s rural south end.

Ottawa Fire Services Public Information Officer Nick DeFazio said 9-1-1 received multiple calls at approximately 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, reporting smoke and flames coming from a home at 6350 Snake Island Road.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they launched a defensive attack on the fire. It took firefighters four hours to get the fire under control.

“There were some hazards on scene, like propane tanks. Another vehicle caught fire that was on scene, as well as multiple walls started to collapse,” DeFazio told CTV News Ottawa.

“So we had to create some exclusion zones to keep our firefighters safe and keep them out of those areas.”

There are no reported injuries. Officials said no one was home at the time of the fire.

“The home was under construction,” DeFazio said. “No one was home at the time and no one’s displaced that we know of at this time.”

The Ottawa Police Service says it is investigating the fire.

There was a fire at the same location in 2021. That fire caused $750,000 in damage.
