Eastern Ontario man racing in NASCAR competition for the first time

A racecar driver from eastern Ontario is getting set to race in his first NASCAR event. CTV’s Camille Wilson reports.

Racecar driver Trevor Hill is gearing up for his first NASCAR competition Sunday at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville.

Hill is the co-owner of TWOth Autosport racing team in Calabogie, managing drivers in the shop and getting cars ready for the track.

This weekend, Hill will put on a helmet and be the driver of the Tomlinson Motorsports NASCAR.

The race is the WeatherTech 200, the last road course race of the NASCAR season this year in Canada. Thirty cars are registered for the event, with pro NASCAR Canada drivers like Alex Tagliani and Kevin Lacroix.

Hill says it’s a lot of fun being a racecar driver and he is happy to have a chance to get on the track when the opportunity presents itself.

“As a kid, I always dreamed of being a racecar driver. That’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to be professional, both my brother and I. Obviously the cards didn’t fall into our hands, so we decided to make a business out of it so we can stay in the industry and do the things that we love to do,” says Hill, “The opportunity to come about to be able to drive a professional car, it’s quite fun. To be doing it in a NASCAR series is even better. That’s a dream come true. I remember playing with Matchbox cars that are NASCAR and on a little carpet, so this is kind of cool.”

Hill has been racing since 1998, from go karts all the way up.

“I took a quite a few years off while we were growing the business and then in 2022 and 2023, I started racing again,” says Hill.

“I’ve been able to get opportunities to drive other cars ever since then. It’s my first time running a NASCAR or a stock car, so this is going to be completely new, completely different for me. This is going to be fun. I’m really enjoying the challenge and the change because it’s different from everything else that we do in the shop,” says Hill.

Hill says he’s proud to be from among a group of racecar drivers from the Calabogie area.

“It’s really cool. Ever since they built this facility here, it’s been able to breed drivers, coaches,” says Hill, “but it’s really nice to feel a part of that family and to be able to take that family and knowledge that we’ve gained here at Calabogie and take it to the national scene.”

The winner of the race receives prize money of up to $15,000. Hill says he just wants to do well as it will open up more opportunities and doors for him to drive more professional cars and generate business.
