A 47-year-old Gatineau man is facing a $1,468 fine after being observed speeding 70 km/h over the speed limit on a Gatineau highway. The Sûreté du Québec says an officer stopped a driver for “excessive speeding” on Highway 50 East near Lorrain at approximately 10 p.m. Sunday. “The driver was travelling 170 km/h in a 100 km/h zone,” police said. The driver received a $1,468 fine, 14 demerit points for speeding and his driver’s licence was suspended for seven days. “The Sûreté du Québec reminds drivers that speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on Quebec roads,” police said.
