CBSA charges Akwesasne man with smuggling firearms into Canada

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says a 21-year-old Akwesasne man is facing several charges related to smuggling firearms after a seizure in the Cornwall, Ont. area earlier this month.

The CBSA says a man who sought entry into Canada at the Cornwall border crossing on March 3 fled after his vehicle was referred to secondary examination.

RCMP officers arrested the man during a traffic stop a short time later and returned the vehicle to the border crossing, where CBSA officers seized three “assault-style” firearms, three prohibited magazines, and the man’s vehicle.

Warren Oakes, 21, of Akwesasne, is facing the following charges:

• Smuggling prohibited firearms into Canada.
• Smuggling prohibited devices into Canada
• Uttering false statements
• Evading compliance
• Hindering an officer
• Two counts of possession of unlawfully imported items
• Unlawful importation of prohibited firearms
• Unlawful importation of prohibited devices
• Possession of prohibited firearms without licence
• Possession of prohibited devices without licence

The CBSA says the investigation remains ongoing and the charges have not been proven or tested in court.
