Canada Post workers were joined by members of other unions and labour leaders on Parliament Hill Wednesday morning. “We’re here today to fight, number one, for fair public services, as well as good jobs and a sustainable post office,” Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) President Jan Simpson told CTV News Ottawa. “It lets me know that people have had enough. Workers are tired of their rights being stripped away from them.” Groups such as the Canadian Labour Congress joined CUPW to show their support. Postal workers walked off the job last week, just hours after the federal government announced sweeping changes to mail delivery. “Postal service is still something useful in Canada, that’s still something that means a lot for not only employers, but to all Canadians, which are right now being robbed of their public service,” says Pat Belisle, a letter carrier from Montreal who attended the rally. The government says the changes are financially necessary, but the union says they will lead to job cuts. The rally comes on a national day of action for the Canadian Union of Postal Workers across the country. Simpson estimates about 500 people attended the rally in Ottawa.
