The Canada Border Services Agency says officers seized several prohibited guns and quantities of drugs from two Americans attempting to cross into Canada in Lansdowne, Ont., east of Kingston. On May 23, two people approached the Thousand Islands border crossing in a motorhome hauling a pickup truck, the CBSA says. The pair said they had “made a wrong turn” towards Canada, and that they had no firearms or narcotics to declare. “They were referred for a secondary examination, and the driver admitted that he did have a firearm in the motorhome. Both travellers were arrested for smuggling,” the CBSA said. It says a search of the motorhome and pickup truck revealed eight firearms, including four that are prohibited in Canada, 13 magazines, including seven prohibited over-capacity magazines, 1,500 rounds of ammunition, and “personal amounts” of several drugs, including cocaine, psilocybin, and cannabis. According to the CBSA, Daniel Sargent, 59, of Virginia, and Danette Garrelts, 56, of California, have each been charged with numerous offences, including seven counts of failing to report goods under the Customs Act, 12 counts of smuggling, five counts of drug-related charges, and more than two dozen firearm-related charges. The accused were remanded into custody. Both are next scheduled to appear in court on July 31. The charges have not yet been tested or proven in court.
