2 people hurt in 2-vehicle crash in Ottawa’s south end

A man was airlifted to hospital after a two-vehicle crash in Ottawa’s south end.

Emergency crews responded to the crash on First Line Road near Phelan Road East at 10:53 a.m. Tuesday.

Ottawa Fire Services Public Information Officer Nick DeFazio said the driver of a pickup truck that left the roadway and struck a tree was trapped inside the vehicle.

“Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and advanced a charged hose line as a precaution before beginning the extrication process,” DeFazio said. “Using specialized hydraulic tools, firefighters safely freed the trapped driver at 11:15. The driver of the second vehicle was not trapped.”

An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson tells CTV News Ottawa paramedics believe the man driving the pickup truck experienced a medical incident before the crash. He was also injured in the crash.

He was airlifted by an Ornge air ambulance to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the car that ended up in the ditch was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

On Wednesday, the Ottawa Police Service said a 60-year-old man has been charged with careless driving causing bodily harm. He was also issued a three-day driver’s licence suspension for registering a warn reading on an approved screening device.
