Police on Manitoulin Island say a traffic complaint about an all-terrain vehicle on Wikwemikong Way in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory led to drug trafficking charges against two individuals – both with outstanding warrants. Officers responded to the complaint at about 5:50 p.m. on June 21 and located the ATV with a female driver and a male passenger. The driver, a 29-year-old woman from Wiikwemkoong, was found to be wanted on an outstanding Tribal police warrant and was taken into custody. The passenger, a 31-year-old man with no fixed address, was also found to be wanted. He had an outstanding warrant held by the Ontario Provincial Police and was also taken into custody. Drugs, cash, paraphernalia seized During the investigation, police located suspected cocaine and fentanyl. Officers seized more than an estimated $2,600 of fentanyl and cocaine as well as more than $1,000 in cash. Packaging materials, a scale, a cutting agent and multiple cell phones were also recovered. Both the driver and the passenger were subsequently charged with two drug trafficking offences and possession of property obtained by crime. Both accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing. Police commend community reporting Ron Gignac, Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service’s Chief, said the outcome demonstrates the value of timely reporting by residents. “This incident highlights the important role our community plays in keeping Wiikwemkoong safe,” said Gignac. Gignac also encouraged everyone to continue reporting suspicious or dangerous activities without delay.
