Wahnapitae First Nations pathologist appointed to the Order of Canada

Governor General Louise Arbour announced 61 new appointments to the order of Canada on June 26, including the country’s first First Nations forensic pathologist.

Dr. Kona Kristen Chant Williams who teaches a course at Laurentian University was appointed to the members category for her forensic work through culturally informed leadership, national advocacy and system reform.

“Teaching the next generation of medical students, so making sure that the next generation has an idea of what I do, sees it as an option and will carry that work forward. I’m no longer the only First Nation Forensic Pathologist. That just makes me really happy because there are more coming after me,” said Williams speaking with CTV News on Friday.

“Her work strengthens death investigations, advances equity for Indigenous communities, and modernizes forensic standards. As a national adviser and academic leader, she champions justice, representation and improved responses to missing Indigenous people,” said the Governor General in a press release Friday.

“The Order of Canada recognizes those whose contributions help us see our country and our place in the world with greater clarity and purpose.”

Other prominent Canadians named include actor Michael J. Fox, soccer player Christine Sinclair, former NHL player Yvan Cournoyer and Corinne Etta Sparks, Canada’s first Black woman to serve as a judge.

Governor General Mary Simon made these appointments on April 17.
