Two in custody after armed robbery, police standoff in Sudbury

Two people were arrested after a standoff in the Val Caron that began around 5:30 a.m. Saturday when police responded to an armed robbery on MR 80.

Police in Greater Sudbury have taken two people into custody following an armed robbery and barricaded suspect situation that closed a section of Municipal Road 80 and prompted a shelter-in-place in the Val Caron community on Saturday morning.

Greater Sudbury Police Service cruisers were out in the area of Municipal Road 80 and Romeo Street early Saturday morning following reports of a robbery with a firearm at a gas station at about 5:28 a.m.

Police said the suspects had fled on foot prior to their arrival.

“There is an increase police presence in this area due to an active investigation,” police said in a social media post shortly after 8:30 a.m.

“Our canine unit, supported by patrol operations, conducted a track in the area that led officers to a residence on MR80,” wrote Staff Sgt. Adam Demers said in an email to CTV News shortly after 11 a.m.

“The individuals believed to be involved in the robbery are believed to be inside the residence.”

Area contained, two in custody

Police had contained the home and were communicating with those inside for a peaceful resolution.

Police officials said that officials made entry into the home shortly after 11 a.m. and took two people into custody.

“Officers have applied for a search warrant for the residence,” Demers said in a second email shortly before noon.

The shelter-in-place has been lifted and MR 80 has reopened to traffic.

Residents near the residence were initially asked to shelter in place and officers had shut down Municipal Road 80 between Division Street and Isabelle Street during the standoff.

“We would like to thank the community for the cooperation throughout this matter,” said police.

Demers said that police will provide another update sometime after the warrant has been executed.
