Timmins police, MTO find safety violations in targeted enforcement blitz

The Timmins Police Service and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation conducted a joint commercial motor vehicle enforcement initiative earlier this month, identifying numerous safety violations.

The initiative ran from March 9 to 13, throughout Timmins and the surrounding area. It focused on enhancing road safety through a combination of enforcement, education and detailed inspections of commercial motor vehicles.

Officers utilized a high-visibility approach and mass inspection triage techniques to efficiently assess compliance and identify potential safety concerns. During the enforcement period, officers encountered challenging weather conditions, including periods of heavy snowfall. These conditions further highlighted the critical importance of ensuring that commercial vehicles are properly maintained and that drivers are operating in full compliance with safety regulations.

“Motorists are reminded that safe roads are a shared responsibility,” said police in a news release.

“Ensuring compliance with regulations, especially during adverse weather conditions, is essential to protecting all road users.”

Significant violations found

Throughout the enforcement period, numerous vehicles were found to have significant safety violations. Officers identified several out-of-service defects – with equipment defects acting as the leading contributor to these findings. Other out-of-service defects included hours of service non-compliance, driver qualification concerns, including suspended drivers, and load securement violations.

Additional issues observed during the initiative included:

• registration and documentation issues,
• trip inspection deficiencies and
• speeding.

Continued collaboration

Authorities said that the Timmins Police Service’s traffic unit will continue to work collaboratively with the MTO to improve road safety and ensure that commercial carriers operating within the community meet provincial safety standards.
