Teen charged with stunt driving on Hwy. 17

A 17-year-old from Port Hope, Ont., is facing multiple charges after Ontario Provincial Police say they stopped a vehicle travelling 75 km/h over the posted speed limit on a northern Ontario highway earlier this month.

The incident occurred on Sept. 1 at about 4:30 p.m., when police on general patrol on Highway 17 in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township observed a vehicle moving at a high rate of speed.

Motorist charged, licence suspended, vehicle impounded

The vehicle was clocked travelling 165 km/h in a 90 km/h zone, police said in a news release Monday.

OPP then conducted a traffic stop and subsequently charged the young motorist with speeding, stunt driving and failing to surrender their licence.

In addition to the charges, the motorist’s driver’s licence was automatically suspended for 30 days and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days, per the penalties for a stunt driving charge under the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Espanola on Oct. 9 to answer to the charges.
