Sudden death at Sudbury homeless encampment

One person died at a Sudbury homeless encampment Tuesday night. Local police responded to the site around 11 p.m. and say no foul play is suspected.

One person died at Sudbury’s homeless encampment on Energy Court on Tuesday night.

Sudbury police say they responded at around 11 p.m. March 17 to a report of a sudden death.

“Officers and paramedics arrived on scene and confirmed that the 31-year-old man was deceased,” police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said in an email to CTV Wednesday morning.

“Foul play is not suspected. We are working in collaboration with the coroner’s office. A post-mortem will be conducted through the coroner’s office to confirm the cause of death.”

Energy Court has become the largest encampment in the area, with the city funding services on-site.

A count of the number of homeless in the city was most recently conducted in October 2025, which found 411 people were unhoused in the city, with 48 per cent living in encampments.

For the entire year, 1,084 people experienced homelessness at certain points, including 595 people who experienced chronic homelessness and 472 for whom becoming homeless was a new experience.

The statistics are included in a report going to the city’s community and emergency services committee March 23.

The point-in-time count, as it’s known, was conducted Oct. 15, 2025. By comparison, the point-in-time count done Oct. 8, 2024, found there were 505 people who were homeless.

The data also found that the number of people who said they were chronically homeless increased by 17 per cent from 2024 to 2025 (378 to 595 people) and the number of people who returned to homelessness after being housed was down by four per cent (186 to 163).
