Sudbury police arrest ‘prolific offender’ for crime spree

Members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Break Enter and Robbery (B.E.A.R.) Unit have charged a 44-year-old local man in connection with multiple property-related incidents across the city, including theft of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering and theft of catalytic converters.

Police said the accused was identified through proactive investigative efforts as a known prolific offender believed to be responsible for a series of property crimes.

On April 8, the police unit located and charged the man with five counts of breaking and entering to commit an indictable offence, disguise with intent, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, along with seven counts each of mischief and theft.

The accused appeared in bail court on April 9 and has since been remanded into custody.

Ongoing investigation

The police service said the investigation remains ongoing.

“Additional charges may be pending as it is believed that this individual is responsible for additional property-related crimes across our community,” said police in a news release.

Focus on repeat offenders

Police said the arrest reflects the unit’s ongoing work to identify and disrupt repeat offenders whose actions affect the community’s safety and quality of life in the city.

“The Greater Sudbury Police Service remains focused on addressing property crime and targeting repeat offenders to keep our community safe,” said Det. Sgt. Kevin O’Shaughnessy.
