Sudbury gas station robbery leads to firearms, robbery charges for two

A man and woman face robbery and weapons charges after a weekend standoff in the Greater Sudbury community of Val Caron.

A 36-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman are facing multiple charges following an armed robbery at a gas station and a subsequent standoff that closed a major roadway and prompted a shelter-in-place order in the Greater Sudbury community of Val Caron over the weekend.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service said officers responded to reports of a robbery with a firearm at a gas station in the area of Municipal Road 80 and Romeo Street at approximately 5:28 a.m. on March 14.

Police said the suspects had fled on foot prior to their arrival.

“There is an increased police presence in this area due to an active investigation,” police said in a social media post that morning.

The police canine unit was deployed and tracked the suspects to a residence on Municipal Road 80, leading to a containment of the home and an extended standoff.

“Our canine unit, supported by patrol operations, conducted a track in the area that led officers to a residence on MR80,” Staff Sgt. Adam Demers of the Greater Sudbury Police Service said in an email to CTV News at the time. “The individuals believed to be involved in the robbery are believed to be inside the residence.”

During the standoff, residents near the home were asked to shelter in place, and officers shut down Municipal Road 80 between Division Street and Isabelle Street.

Shortly after 11 a.m., officers made entry into the home and took two people into custody.

The shelter-in-place order was subsequently lifted, and Municipal Road 80 reopened to traffic.

Search warrant yields firearms

Following the execution of a search warrant at the residence, police released further details on Tuesday regarding what was found inside.

“As a result of the search warrant executed at the residence on MR80, officers located and seized what is believed to be the firearm used in the robbery, a second firearm and ammunition,” police said in a news release.

The two individuals taken into custody at the residence, the 36-year-old man and 46-year-old woman, have both been charged with robbery with a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and disguise with intent.

The man faces additional firearm and probation violation charges, and the woman is also charged with disobeying a court order.

Both individuals attended court on March 15 to answer to the charges.
