Sudbury Five rolls past Jackals for 5th straight win

The Sudbury Five defeated the Lake Erie Jackals 104-82 in Basketball Super League action Sunday afternoon at Sudbury Community Arena in front of an estimated crowd of 1,669.

The victory marks the Five’s fifth consecutive win and their fourth of the season against the Jackals, improving their record to 7-1 atop the league standings. Lake Erie has now fallen to 1-8 after losing to Sudbury on both Saturday and Sunday.

First-half surge secures lead

The Five built a commanding lead in the first half, ending the first quarter up 28-23 and extending it to 56-40 by halftime.

The team’s social media account highlighted the early contribution from beyond the arc, posting that “3 pointers saved the day” heading into the second quarter.

“Working hard,” the team added at halftime.

Alex Kotov led the Five with 20 points and seven rebounds. Duane Notice added 19 points, while Guan Ziyu and Devante Jamison scored 13 and 15 points, respectively. Jamison also tallied five assists and eight rebounds, earning him ‘Greatest Performance of the Day’ honours.

Balanced attack, defensive pressure

Sudbury’s defence forced 13 Lake Erie turnovers, converting them into 10 points. The Five also blocked eight shots, with Nervens Demosthene and Cecil Lee each recording three.

Allen Billinger contributed 13 points for the Five, and Demosthene added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals off the bench.

For the Jackals, Wesley Hinton led all scorers with 19 points off the bench. Kurtis Henderson scored 17 points and James Franklin Jr. added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Lake Erie struggled from three-point range, shooting 5-for-25 or 20 per cent for the game.

Closing out the win

The Five maintained their double-digit lead throughout the second half, outscoring the Jackals 23-19 in the third quarter and 25-23 in the fourth to seal the 22-point victory at home.

Following the game, the team celebrated the continued success on its Facebook page, posting simply: “5 straight wins.”

The Five’s next game is scheduled at home on Feb. 1 against the Windsor Express, the only team to beat Sudbury so far this season. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
