Shelter-in-place in effect in M’Chigeeng First Nation

Reports of an armed suspect prompted police to declare a shelter-in-place order in M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island.

The areas affected include near Hall Street, Mnaawnkwad Drive, and Corbiere Street.

“Police are actively responding to an incident involving a possibly armed individual in the area,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Friday.

Anyone near these areas who is outside should “seek shelter immediately in a secure location,” police said.

“If you are inside, lock all doors and windows, and close curtains or blinds to avoid drawing attention. Do not approach or engage with anyone suspicious. Call 911 immediately if you see or encounter the possibly armed individual.”

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and should not pick up hitchhikers.

“If you are driving in or through this area, please proceed directly to your destination and do not make any additional stops,” police said.

“Individuals not currently in the affected area are requested to avoid travelling there until further notice. An increased police presence can be expected while officers continue their response and investigation.”

Further information will be released as it becomes available, police said.

“We recognize the significant emotional impact that receiving a shelter-in-place can cause,” police said.

“The OPP is taking every precaution necessary to resolve this situation and maintain public safety.”
