A shelter-in-place order in M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island was lifted Friday evening after provincial police said a situation involving a potentially armed individual was resolved without incident. The advisory, which took effect at about 9 a.m., was lifted at about 5:30 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police said in an update at 6:30 p.m. OPP had narrowed the affected area to near Mnaawnkwad Drive and Riverside Drive, after earlier reports had included Hall Street and Corbiere Street. The OPP was assisted by the United Chiefs & Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service. Earlier on July 10, police had advised anyone in the area to shelter-in-place, lock doors and windows, close blinds and avoid approaching anyone suspicious. Motorists were also asked to avoid the area and not pick up hitchhikers. “OPP is taking every precaution necessary to resolve this situation and maintain public safety,” police said in an earlier news release. Authorities also thanked the public for their cooperation and understanding during the lockdown. “The investigation continues,” police said in the evening update. “No further information will be released at this time.” Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to call OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
