Sault police lay charges after border services flags impaired driver

A 65-year-old man faces impaired driving charges following an incident at the Sault Ste. Marie Port of Entry involving both border services officers and city police.

Sault police said the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) initially took the accused into custody on Friday, after a breath sample registered above the legal limit on an approved screening device.

The CBSA informed 911 operators that they had the driver in custody for operation while impaired at about 5:10 p.m. on March 28.

“Sault police were dispatched to the CBSA Sault Ste. Marie port of entry and took custody of the accused,” said the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service in a news release.

The man was then transported to the Sault police services building on Second Line East, where he provided multiple breath samples to a qualified technician, all of which, police say, registered above the legal limit.

The accused has been charged with two impaired driving offences, including operation with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

The man was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
