A 63-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with assault and other offences following an incident on the morning of Aug. 21 involving a hatchet. Police responded around 9:30 a.m. to a report of an assault with a weapon on Wellington Street East. “An investigation revealed the accused struck a victim with a hatchet, causing minor physical injuries, and used the hatchet to damage property,” Sault police said in a news release Aug. 25. “The victim and accused are known to one another. Officers located and arrested the accused nearby.” Charges include assault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000. The suspect was held in custody ahead of a bail hearing.
