A Sault Ste. Marie man is facing multiple charges after members of the Anishinabek Police Service say drugs were seized during a traffic stop in Garden River First Nation. Police said officers stopped a vehicle as part of a RIDE program being conducted in the area of Highway 17B and Belleau Lake Road “in the early morning hours” of Oct. 1. “The driver gave a fake name to the officer, and further investigation determined that the driver was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver’s licence,” said the Indigenous police service in a news release Friday. Search yields cash, suspected drugs Police said the driver was taken into custody and a subsequent search of the vehicle incident to arrest resulted in the seizure of 17.4 grams of suspected cocaine and $640 in cash. As a result, the motorist, a 32-year-old Sault man, was charged with drug trafficking, obstructing a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime and driving while under suspension. Police seek public’s help “This investigation is ongoing,” said police. Authorities are asking anyone with information relevant to the incident to call Anishinabek police at 705-946-4196 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously. “Members of the public can also report suspicious activity in the community using our online reporting tool,” said Anishinabek police. The accused has since been released on an undertaking.
