Public help sought after moose shot, left to waste in northern Ont.

Conservation officers are investigating the illegal killing of a bull moose that was shot and abandoned in a remote forestry cut northwest of Elliot Lake in October and are appealing to the public for information.

Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Sudbury Rainbow Crime Stoppers are seeking tips to identify those responsible.

“Crime Stoppers and the MNR are seeking the public’s assistance in the matter of an abandoned moose,” said Sudbury Crime Stoppers in a social media post related to the incident.

Remote discovery

The incident occurred in Simons Township, approximately 56 kilometres northwest of Elliot Lake. According to authorities, the bull moose was discovered in a forestry cut on the south side of New Kindiogami Road near kilometre marker 34.

Conservation officers received information about the abandoned animal near the end of October, with their investigation determining the moose was shot between Oct. 11 and Oct. 21.

Serious offense

Authorities emphasized that the deliberate waste of the animal is a significant violation of hunting regulations.

“Abandoning big game animals and leaving them to rot is a serious offense,” Crime Stoppers said in a news release.

Officials are hoping someone with knowledge of the incident will come forward.

“Any information regarding those responsible would be greatly appreciated,” said Crime Stoppers.
