Police watchdog investigates after shooting death of a man in Kenora

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 57-year-old man in Kenora on Tuesday afternoon.

In a news release Wednesday, the SIU said Ontario Provincial Police located a man with knives at Anicinabe Park at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

“The man set fire to a building. Firefighters responded to extinguish the blaze,” the SIU said.

“One officer shot the man. The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

Wawakapewin First Nation identified the man as Bruce Frogg, in a news release on Wednesday..

“Bruce can be remembered by his teachings and stories about the land,” read the release.

“He was an avid outdoorsman harvesting from its bounty and sharing with family and community members.”

Wawakapewin is an Oji-Cree First Nation and remote fly-in community about 350 km north of Sioux Lookout.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Saturday.

“One subject official and seven witness officials have been designated at this time,” said officials with the police watchdog.
