Police on Manitoulin Island seize $28K in cash, drugs at R.I.D.E. check

Ride check in Wiikwemkoong uncovers $22,000 in fentanyl, $6,000 in cocaine along with cash. Four arrested with multiple charges laid.

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service seized fentanyl and cocaine worth more than $28,000 during a routine R.I.D.E. check on Sunday evening.

Officers discovered fentanyl with an estimated street value of $22,000, along with $6,000 worth of cocaine and a small quantity of cash at about 8 p.m.

The bust resulted in charges against four individuals – three adults and one youth. A 25-year-old man from Brampton, a 55-year-old man from Wiikwemkoong, an 18-year-old man from Mississauga and a youth, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, each face two counts of drug trafficking. The youth has been charged with obstructing a peace officer.

The accused adults are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 16.

Police say the seizure underscores their ongoing commitment to combating drug-related crime and safeguarding the community.

Community and police collaboration key to success

Chief Ron Gignac credited intelligence-led policing and community cooperation for the seizure.

“This operation is a clear example of what can be achieved when our community stands united against the threat of drug trafficking,” Gignac said in a news release. “Our Drug Enforcement Strategy is rooted in intelligence-led policing and community trust. We are not just seizing drugs, we are reclaiming safety, dignity, and hope for our people.”

The WTPS works closely with the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police in a Joint Force Operation aimed at dismantling drug networks.

“Our goal is not only to enforce the law but to heal and protect our community,” Gignac added. “By working together with UCCM and OPP, we are building a united front against the drug crisis that prioritizes safety, accountability, and hope.”

Public urged to report suspicious activity

Authorities encourage residents to report any suspicious behaviour anonymously through Crime Stoppers or online via the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service’s web portal.
