Police investigate after body found in the Spanish River

Ontario Provincial Police's underwater search and recovery unit removed a body from Spanish River in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township on Sunday.

Ontario Provincial Police say they have yet to identify human remains discovered Sunday afternoon in the Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

Police and the OPP underwater search and recovery unit responded to a report of a deceased person in the Spanish River around 1 p.m. July 20.

“The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed,” police said in a news release Monday.

“There is no concern for public safety. Further information will be released as it becomes available.”

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Manitoulin OPP crime unit, the OPP Forensic Identification Services and the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
