Anishinabek Police Service says just after 3 a.m. on Oct. 30, an officer saw an SUV travelling eastbound on Highway 17B at an estimated speed of 160 km/h. In trying to stop the vehicle, the officer noticed the SUV was not maintaining its lane by swerving and had difficulty navigating turns off the highway, police said in a news release Nov. 1. “When the SUV finally came to a stop, it did so in the road and after speaking with the female driver, the officer determined the individual was intoxicated,” police said. “The officer also noticed an open case of alcohol, which was readily available to the driver.” The driver was arrested and taken to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service station for testing, where registered samples were three times the legal limit, police said. The 18-year-old woman from Sault Ste. Marie was charged with impaired and dangerous driving. Her driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. The accused has a scheduled court date on Dec. 21.
