The Sunterra Market location in the Calgary community of Britannia is shutting down. Officials took to social media on Tuesday to share the news, saying the location will close for good on Monday, Nov. 9. The post says the closure is due to “changes in property ownership and tenancy arrangements” in the building, which sits on the corner of Elbow Drive and 49 Avenue S.W. “We are no longer able to continue operating at this location,” reads the post. “While we deeply regret having to say goodbye, we’re incredibly grateful for the loyalty, support and relationships we’ve built with our customers, neighbours and community partners since opening in 1996.” Sunterra has five other Calgary locations, and the post says Fresh Rewards members — the company’s loyalty program — will be able to redeem their points at other locations. “Your points will not expire as a result of this closure,” the post said. To our Britannia customers, neighbours and team members, thank you for being part of our story for the past 30 years. It’s been a privilege to serve you, and we look forward to staying connected for many years to come,” the post reads. “Thank you for 30 wonderful years, Britannia.” Legal, financial troubles Back in May, a Sunterra location in Edmonton closed its doors after operating for 30 years. The Sunterra Food Corporation and affiliated companies filed for creditor protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act in April last year. The group cited months of financial strain amid rising food and labour costs. Prior to that filing, in 2024, a Sunterra-owned meat processing plant in Trochu, Alta., was lost in a fire. The company’s U.S. affiliates were also facing allegations of cheque-kiting south of the border – fraud that involves writing a cheque drawn from a bank account that doesn’t have enough money. An Alberta judge later ruled the grocer company was liable to U.S. agricultural lender Compeer Financial for around $35 million. Edmonton still has one Sunterra location, located inside the Lendrum Place Shopping Centre. - With files from Hannah Kavanagh, CTV News
