Pedestrian dies after Hwy. 655 crash in Timmins

A 79-year-old pedestrian has died after a collision on Highway 655 overnight. The highway was closed for several hours before reopening at about 4:30 a.m.

Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a fatal collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in Timmins on Monday.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 655 and Ross Avenue East shortly after 6 p.m. on Dec. 8.

The Timmins Police Service initially responded to the scene.

Highway closed for investigation

Initial Timmins police described the crash as a “serious motor vehicle collision.”

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area, seek alternative routes, and allow emergency personnel sufficient space to work safely,” Timmins police said.

The closure remained in effect overnight as emergency crews worked at the scene.

Road reopened

In an update shortly after 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Timmins police advised that the highway had been reopened.

“Emergency crews and traffic collision investigators have completed their work and the highway is fully operational,” said police.

Ontario Provincial Police have taken over the investigation.

OPP confirm fatality

OPP’s South Porcupine Detachment issued a news release Tuesday afternoon confirming the crash was fatal.

“A 79-year-old person was transported to hospital by ambulance, where they later died,” OPP said.

OPP confirmed the investigation into the collision is ongoing.
