Residents in Greater Sudbury are breaking out their sunglasses and flip-flops as patio season officially kicks off in the city. The past weekend marked the unofficial start of the summer tradition that draws thousands outdoors to enjoy food, drinks, and warmer weather. Organizers with Downtown Sudbury say this year is the biggest yet, with 16 patios participating – the highest number to date. Jeff MacIntyre, the downtown BIA’s executive director, told CTV News that patios hold a special appeal for northerners. “Well, I think patios in general for northern Ontario – we don’t have summer all year like some parts of the world, so when we get it, we really want to appreciate it and get out and enjoy that part of the year,” he said. “And you know, northerners – we’re a special breed on top of that – and you know, we extend that season as long as we can.” Weather permitting, patio season is expected to run until the second week of October.
