OPP-led commercial vehicle blitz results in 15 trucks pulled off Sault Ste. Marie roads

Ontario Provincial Polie say a joint enforcement initiative targeting commercial motor vehicles in Sault Ste. Marie on June 19 resulted in 15 trucks being taken out of service for mechanical fitness issues, along with dozens of charges and warnings.

OPP members conducted the operation alongside members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and Ministry of Transportation enforcement officers.

Police said over the course of the initiative, officers completed 42 vehicle inspections.

15 vehicles removed for mechanical issues

According to OPP, of the 42 trucks inspected, 15 were taken out of service due to mechanical fitness problems. An additional two vehicles were sidelined for driver qualification issues.

Additionally, the provincial police said one vehicle was impounded during the operation, and five licence plates were seized.

“Commercial drivers are reminded that 24/7 compliance with commercial vehicle safety requirements, such as inspections, hours of service, secured cargo, and the movement of dangerous goods, is critical to keeping roads safe,” the OPP said in a social media post.

41 charges laid, 25 warnings issued

In total, officers issued 41 charges.

Among the infractions were one count of cannabis readily available, two charges for driving while suspended and another charge for operating an unsafe vehicle.

Police also issued 25 warnings to drivers for various infractions.

“The OPP remains committed to working with our road safety partners to enhance CMV safety, remove unsafe vehicles from our roads and reduce collisions,” OPP wrote.

Safety responsibility shared

The OPP emphasized that safety on the province’s roadways is a shared responsibility.

“It is every driver’s responsibility to share our roads safely, especially with large commercial vehicles,” police said.

Police said that the enforcement initiative came as part of ongoing efforts by the OPP and its partners to improve commercial vehicle safety and ensure compliance with regulations governing the trucking industry.
