OPP charge driver with impaired after Hwy. 11 pursuit

A 27-year-old southern Ontario man faces multiple charges after the Ontario Provincial Police say he failed to stop for officers twice while driving impaired along Highway 11 on Boxing Day.

“At approximately 8:20 a.m., officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 11 in Burk’s Falls for a Highway Traffic Act offence. The driver did not stop,” OPP said in a news release Sunday.

Second stop attempted in South River

The vehicle continued northbound, leading provincial police to make another attempt to pull it over.

“A second attempt was made in South River, but the vehicle continued northbound,” OPP said.

Authorities eventually succeeded in stopping the vehicle just south of North Bay.

Upon speaking with the motorist, “officers determined the driver had consumed alcohol,” OPP said.

The man was taken into custody and transported to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing.

Charges and penalties

Following the investigation, the motorist from Dufferin County was charged with two counts of flight from a peace officer and three impaired driving offences – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80 and novice driver with a BAC above zero.

In addition to the charges, under provincial law, the man also received a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days.

The accused was release is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on Jan. 20.

“Impaired driving puts everyone at risk,” said OPP Cost. Kyler Brouwer in a related social media post.

“If you plan to drink, plan not to drive.”

“Drive sober,” added OPP.
