OPP charge driver, impound truck for 45 days after RIDE stop

A 25-year-old local man faces a prohibited driving charge after Ontario Provincial Police stopped a vehicle at a RIDE checkpoint in Mississauga First Nation over the weekend.

Police said that officers with the East Algoma detachment were conducting the reduce impaired driving everywhere initiative at the intersection of Village Road and Park Road in the community at about 9 p.m. on March 7 when a black pickup truck entered the checkpoint.

Officers noted that the driver failed to produce a valid driver’s licence and a subsequent query revealed the motorist was operating the vehicle while prohibited.

“Consequently, the vehicle was impounded for 45 days,” OPP said in a news release.

Additionally, as a result of the stop and investigation, the motorist was formally charged with operation while prohibited.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on May 7.
