Officials say one person was found dead inside a serious, early-morning fire in Billings Township on Thursday. It happened on Hawk Road just after 7 a.m. Area residents could see smoke pouring across the bay. “One person was located deceased,” Ontario Provincial Police said Friday morning in a news release. “The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.” A video obtained by CTV News taken by a neighbour showed heavy smoke billowing from the property. The area was still an active fire scene as early Thursday evening. The Manitoulin OPP crime unit is investigating with help from the Sudbury OPP canine unit, the OPP’s Forensic Identification Services Unit, the Office of the Fire Marshal, the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. “The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and further information will be released as it becomes available,” police said.
