One killed, nine people escape house fire in northwestern Ont.

Police in Sandy Lake First Nation say one person has died and nine people escaped a house fire that broke out in the community on Thursday afternoon.

One person was killed Thursday afternoon in a residential fire in Sandy Lake First Nation.

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service responded at 3:30 p.m. to the fire and found “a home engulfed in flames and community firefighters actively working toward extinguishing the blaze.”

“Nine people escaped and received treatment at the community nursing station for injuries consistent with smoke inhalation,” police said in a news release Friday.

“Police confirmed the discovery of a deceased person inside the home shortly after 4:15 p.m. A scene was established and an investigation into the fire and death (are) ongoing.”

No further details about the fire or the deceased are available “at this time,” police added.
