Spring storm brings heavy snowfall across Saskatchewan

Another spring storm has brought heavy snowfall to many areas of the province, with one community reporting nearly 50 centimetres.

Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang says the system dropped about 15 centimeters in Saskatoon, with Regina and Moose Jaw seeing around 20 centimetres.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says reports on social media indicate up to 48 centimetres of snow in Eatonia, southwest of Kindersley.

Lang says heavy spring snowfalls are not uncommon.

“You have the cold air still lingering to the north, while warmer air tries to push up from the south. When those collide, it can lead to heavier snowfall because warm air holds more moisture,” she said.

Lang says a brief warm-up is on the way, but it may not last long, as Environment and Climate Change Canada tracks another system expected to arrive mid-next week.

“It looks like a precipitation-maker. I don’t want to say rain or snow, it could be either or both, but it does look like a significant system.”

With the potential for more winter weather on the way, Lang said to keep the shovel handy and hold off on changing winter tires.
