Northern Ontario taxi driver charged with sexual assault

A 25-year-old taxicab driver has been charged with sexual assault following an incident in Thunder Bay, Ont., early Thursday morning, police say.

At about 1:30 a.m. on May 15, members of the Thunder Bay Police Service responded to an address on Cumberland Street South following the report of a possible sexual assault.

“Responding officers located a female victim who reported being a passenger in a licensed taxicab when she was sexually assaulted by the driver,” police said in a news release.

The victim was taken to hospital for assessment and treatment. Investigators identified the suspect vehicle and subsequently located the driver.

As a result of the investigation, the local man has been charged with sexual assault.

The accused appeared in court on Thursday and was remanded, with a future court date scheduled.
