Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Greater Sudbury and North Bay along with the communities of Espanola, Killarney, Massey, Mattawa, Powassan and Sturgeon Falls as temperatures are forecast to reach dangerous levels starting Tuesday.

Public health authority urges precautions amid prolonged heat event

Daytime highs of 28 to 31 degrees Celsius, combined with humidex values of 33 to 38, are expected for July 15 - 16, with overnight lows of 19 to 23 degrees Celsius offering little relief. A cooler airmass is anticipated by Thursday. Public Health Sudbury & Districts warns that prolonged exposure increases risks of heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke, exhaustion, and dehydration.

Vulnerable populations at higher risk

Older adults, infants, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses, those experiencing homelessness, and outdoor workers are among the most vulnerable.

“Although some individuals are at higher risk, anyone can suffer from heat-related illnesses,” said Burgess Hawkins, a manager with Public Health Sudbury & Districts’ Health Protection Division.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, nausea, headache, and dark urine, while heat stroke – a medical emergency – involves confusion, high body temperature, and unconsciousness. Officials urge immediate action, including calling 911, if signs of heat stroke appear.

Protective measures recommended

To reduce risks, authorities advise:

• Drinking water before feeling thirsty and avoiding alcohol or caffeine.
• Rescheduling outdoor activities for cooler times of day.
• Wearing loose, light-coloured clothing and seeking shade.
• Never leaving people or pets in parked vehicles.
• Checking on high-risk individuals regularly.

Cooling strategies such as using fans, taking cool showers, and visiting air-conditioned public spaces like libraries are also recommended.
