North Bay police issue Halloween safety tips for the public

North Bay police invite trick-or-treaters to visit them at headquarters on Princess Street West after 5 p.m. Friday to collect goodies and visit K9 Chewie.

The North Bay Police Service has released a set of safety tips for trick-or-treaters and drivers ahead of Halloween night.

“Halloween is a night for fun, treats and spooky costumes, but safety should always come first,” said the North Bay Police Service in a news release Tuesday.

Police said they want everyone to “enjoy the night without accidents or scares.”

Safety Tips for parents and trick-or-treaters

The police service’s guidelines for children and parents emphasize visibility, awareness and supervision.

• Stick together: Younger children should always go with a parent or guardian. Older kids should plan a route and set a clear curfew.
• Be visible: Choose bright costumes or add reflective tape or glow sticks so drivers can see you.
• Stay aware: Avoid masks or glasses that block your vision. Always look both ways before crossing streets and use crosswalks.
• Well-lit areas only: Stick to well-lit areas and houses with lights on and never enter a stranger’s home or car.
• Check treats: Examine candy before eating. Throw away anything damaged or unwrapped. Avoid homemade treats from strangers.

Advice for drivers on the busy night

With streets expected to be filled with children, the police service is asking drivers to be particularly cautious.

Drivers are advised to be “extra alert, slow down and expect the unexpected.”

Police said that “excited children may run into the road or cross between parked cars” and are asking motorists to “take it slow and anticipate sudden movement.”

The police service also warned that “distracted, aggressive and impaired driving are extra dangerous on Halloween.”

Officers are urging drivers to keep phones away, focus on the road and never drive under the influence – police say those celebrating should plan a safe ride home with a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare.

Police headquarters a designated stop for treats

The North Bay Police Service is inviting the public to its headquarters on Princess Street West as part of the evening’s activities.

Trick-or-treaters are welcome at the Constable Leonard Slater Memorial Building after 5 p.m. as service members will be handing out goody bags, while supplies last, and children can visit K9 Chewie, the trauma support dog from Victim Services of Nipissing District.

Police said that additional officers will be on patrol throughout the city and the service encourages the public to approach officers for help or to report any concerns.

“If you see something, say something,” said police.

“Let’s all do our part to keep the community safe this Halloween by watching out for one another and reporting anything suspicious.”
