North Bay city councillor Maggie Horsfield, who is also the city’s deputy mayor, has announced she’s running to be mayor in the October municipal election. “I am making this announcement now because I believe it is important for residents and potential candidates for council to know that there is a mayoral candidate prepared to lead with integrity, fiscal responsibility, and a commitment to putting our community first,” Horsfield said in a news release July 22. “I hope this announcement provides others with the opportunity to consider their own contributions to municipal leadership, knowing there is a candidate for mayor who values collaboration, respectful governance, and a shared vision for North Bay’s future.” Three people in the running Horsfield is one of three people who have registered to run for mayor, joining fellow councillor Jamie Lowery and first-time candidate Connor Currie. Current Mayor Peter Chirico, who was embroiled in an expenses scandal during his term in office, hasn’t announced whether he will run. In her announcement, Horsfield said that her time on council has given her experience in “municipal finances, strategic planning, and the importance of accountable decision-making.” “My decision to run has been made thoughtfully and with the support of my family,” she said. “I am prepared to meet the demands of municipal leadership while remaining present for those who matter most to me. I believe effective leadership is built on strong support systems, teamwork, and clear priorities.” During her campaign, she said she will be on leave from her employer, Nipissing University. “This arrangement will allow me to dedicate my full time and attention to engaging with residents across our community, listening to their priorities, and sharing my vision for North Bay’s future throughout the campaign,” Horsfield said. Full platform in September “My full campaign platform will be released at the beginning of September. September and October will be important months for discussion and engagement with residents leading up to election day. I encourage everyone to enjoy the summer season with family and friends, and I am looking forward to listening to the ideas, concerns, and priorities of North Bay residents in the months ahead.” Voters across Ontario vote in the municipal election on Oct. 26.
