An 86-year-old man driving a mobility scooter was seriously injured Monday afternoon in Sudbury when his scooter collided with a pickup truck in a downtown intersection. However, police said in a news release that their investigation found the scooter was crossing against the traffic light, so the pickup driver won’t be charged. The collision took place around 1:40 p.m. June 29 in a crosswalk near the corner of Lloyd and Paris streets. “The individual operating the mobility scooter, an 86-year-old man from Greater Sudbury, was transported to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries,” police said in a news release June 30. Victim, 86, in critical condition “He remains in hospital in critical condition.” The man in the scooter was driving southbound toward Paris Street within the Lloyd Street crosswalk when the scooter and a pickup truck collided. “The pickup truck was travelling eastbound from Elm Street onto Lloyd Street,” police said. “Based on witness statements and a review of CCTV footage, investigators have confirmed that the individual operating the scooter entered the crosswalk against the pedestrian signal, while the driver of the pickup truck was proceeding with a green light.” No charges will be laid against the driver of the pickup truck, police added. “Our thoughts remain with the injured individual, his loved ones and all those affected by this tragic incident.”
