Kirkland Lake, Ont., suspects on probation charged with copper wire thefts

Two people from Kirkland Lake have been charged in connection with a series of copper wire thefts in the area, in an investigation that began in July 2024.

Two people from Kirkland Lake have been charged in connection with a series of copper wire thefts in the area that caused $200,000 in damage and missing equipment.

Ontario Provincial Police said the investigation began in July 2024.

There were “multiple reports of copper wire and related materials being stolen from mine sites and railway infrastructure throughout the region,” the OPP said in a news release Thursday.

“The investigation has since linked three separate incidents to the same accused individuals.”

A 36-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman have been charged with three counts each of breach and enter, theft more than $5,000, mischief (destroying property), possession of the proceeds of crime more than $5,000 and one count each of violating probation.

The woman has an Oct. 23 court date in Kirkland Lake, while the man will appear Sept. 18.
