Several highways are closed due to winter storm conditions Monday across northeastern Ontario.

Highway 17 is closed from Desbarats, as well as just west of the Sault, all the way to White River.

Highway 144 is also closed, from the intersection with Highway 101 south all the way to the Arctic Watershed/Highway 144 Rest Area near Sultan Industrial Road.

Highway 11 is closed from North Bay to Nipigon, also due to bad weather. Several smaller highways are closed, including Highway 655 from the intersection with Highway 11 in Driftwood to Kidd Creek Mine Road.

Highway 101 is closed from the intersection with Highway 144 to the Highway 17 intersection in Wawa. Highway 129 is closed from the Highway 101 intersection to the Highway 17 intersection in Thessalon.

And Highway 69 between Highway 64 in Alban and Parry Sound has reopened following a collision.

The road closures come as Timmins and the Sault are under orange winter storm warnings, with Timmins expected to get as much as 60 cm of snow from now until Monday night. Environment Canada says the Sault could get as much as 40 cm.

Group Health Centre and the health unit announced they are closed Monday due to the storm.

Sudbury and North Bay are under yellow winter storm warnings, with 10-15 cm of ice buildup expected, along with as much as 20 cm of snow.

“Avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities,” Environment Canada said.

“Prepare for disruptions to transportation, services and utilities.”

Greater Sudbury has declared a significant weather event. Garbage and recycling collection may be affected and it may take more time for roads and sidewalks to be cleared.
