Federal government provides $104K for seniors programs in Sudbury

Seniors programs got a boost from the federal government Thursday in the form of $104,000 in funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

Seniors programs in Sudbury got a boost from the federal government Thursday in the form of $104,000 in funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

“We’re funding five organizations who have developed programs specifically for seniors,” said Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe at the news conference announcing the money.

“We know it’s really important for seniors’ mental and physical health to stay very engaged in their communities. To be socially active, as well, is really important.”

Recipients include Thriving African Families, a grassroots organization that started in 2021 that is receiving $25,000.

In 2024, they evolved into a nonprofit, offering support to families of African heritage through intergenerational programs.

Executive director Dokun Nochirionye said the funding will allow them to reach 75 seniors in a year through monthly activities, while also providing transportation support and training, such as food handler’s training to support volunteer opportunities.

“I remember that our first gathering had only two seniors present and we had to raise funds to be able to provide refreshments,” Nochirionye said.

Money ‘makes a huge difference’

“We got another organization that partnered with us and gave us free use of one room in their facility. For the program, we got community members to facilitate pro bono, and that was how we held the first session.”

“This funding … makes a huge difference and we can have the program consistently.”

Rainbow Routes Association will also receive $25,000 for its Green Prescription Movement program.

“What we’re doing is we’re recognizing the social isolation that many seniors might be experiencing, especially post-pandemic,” said executive director Rachel Mantas.

The group will offer a biweekly program Thursday evenings to get people out on the trail, beginning May 28.

“What that’s really going to do is not just get them physically moving, but find new friends and community members to connect with, whether they’re a newcomer or they’ve lived here their whole lives,” Mantas said.

L’Arche Sudbury will receive $9,360 for its Bridging Generations program.

“We bring seniors together with … people with intellectual disabilities and without intellectual disabilities to do some programming together and to build relationships,” said executive director Teresa Mullin.

The goal is to “develop a greater sense of belonging to L’Arche and to the larger community.”

The Art Gallery of Sudbury will receive $25,000 for Elgin Street Sparks, while Sudbury Queers United Around Diversity will see $9,360 for Queering Mental Health.
