Environment Canada issues heat warning for several areas across northeast

SUDBURY — Beginning the afternoon of Aug. 9, a heat warning issued by Environment Canada will take effect in several communities across the northeast.

Heat warnings are issued when the forecast is expected to reach or exceed 29 degrees Celsius during the day, 18 degrees Celsius at night and the humidex rises to 36 or above for a period of two days or more.

Communities listed in the heat warning include:

Those most at risk throughout a heat warning are infants, older adults, young children pregnant woman, those who work or exercise in the heat, people with chronic illnesses, people who use alcohol or illicit drugs and those who are homeless.

“Although some individuals are at higher risk, anyone can suffer from heat-related illnesses,” said Burgess Hawkins, a manager with Public Health Sudbury & Districts’ Health Protection Division said in a news release.

“Everyone should take precautions.”
