Ontario Provincial Police’s traffic incident management and enforcement team conducted a two-day blitz late last month on Highway 69, targeting speeding and aggressive driving. Officers set up on the two-lane section between Parry Sound and Sudbury on Aug. 28-29. Of the 69 charges laid, 43 were for speeding, seven for stunt driving, four for insurance offences and two charges were laid under the Cannabis Control Act. Speed-related deaths almost doubled “Remaining charges included unsafe move, unsafe vehicle, speed limiter and document offences,” police said in a post on social media. “A driver charged with stunt driving faces an immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment. Speed is the leading factor in road deaths across the northeast region this year, and speed-related deaths are nearly double what they were at this point last year.” The OPP reminded motorists that the two-lane section of Highway 69 is an especially active area, with several vehicles and lots of construction going on. “The margin for error is small,” police said. “Obey posted limits and make your lane changes safely.”
