Collision on Hwy. 144 leads to drug and weapons charges

An early morning crash Wednesday north of Halfway Lake on Highway 144 didn’t cause any injuries, but did lead to several weapons and drug charges.

The incident took place at 4:55 a.m. when Ontario Provincial Police and fire services responded to a single-vehicle crash on the highway, located in unincorporated territory.

“The two occupants reported no injuries,” police said in a news release.

Brass knuckles, stun gun

“A search of the vehicle located brass knuckles, a conductive energy weapon and drugs suspected to be cannabis, cocaine and opioids.”

The driver, a 60-year-old from Goderich, was charged with two counts each of weapons and drug possession, and one charge of driving with cannabis readily available and dangerous driving.

The passenger, a 52-year-old from Hamilton, was charged with two counts each of weapons and drug possession and one count of possession of a Schedule 3 substance.

Both accused were released and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 27 in Sudbury.

As a result of the crash, the highway was reduced to one lane, with altering traffic for just over five hours, during the investigation and the removal of the vehicle.
