More than 800 of the best armwrestlers in Canada will bring their bulging biceps to Sudbury next spring for the 2027 World Armwrestling Qualifier. The event will be held April 25-27 at the Radisson Hotel. It’s expected to draw hundreds of athletes from across Canada, all competing for a chance to earn a coveted spot on Team Canada. “As the official World Armwrestling Qualifier, this event will determine which athletes will go on to represent Canada at the World Armwrestling Championships,” organizers said in a news release May 6. “Competitors will face off in a high-stakes environment where strength, technique and mental toughness will be pushed to the limit across numerous weight classes and divisions, including para-athlete categories.” Armwrestling excellence Sudbury has a history of armwrestling excellence: Christine Jaworski was world champion in the mid-1980s. The three-day competition will feature Canada’s top-ranked armwrestlers competing for national team selection in multiple divisions across weight classes, youth, masters, and para categories. Also on hand will be certified referees and national-level competition standards and “an exciting, spectator-friendly environment showcasing elite competition.” “In the lead-up to the 2027 qualifier, a series of monthly armwrestling events will be held in Greater Sudbury to build momentum, develop local athletes and engage the community,” the release said. “These events will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on select Saturdays, creating consistent opportunities for participation and fan engagement.” The world championships will be held in Ottawa in September 2027. “The organizing committee is committed to delivering a professionally run, inclusive, and high-impact event that will leave a lasting legacy in the region,” the release said.
