The Ontario government is providing $455,000 for emergency response and repair costs due to storm damage in the northeast this past spring, The Municipality of Callander is getting the funding to repair essential infrastructure damaged by an extreme storm surge in April, the province said in a news release Oct. 30. The money comes from the province’s Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program, which helps municipalities pay for extraordinary emergency response and cleanup costs due to natural disasters. The funds can also be used to repair essential property and infrastructure, such as roads and bridges. “The April 2024 storm had a significant impact on our community, causing extensive damage to our shoreline infrastructure,” said Mayor Jordy Carr. “For a small municipality like Callander, unexpected costs of this magnitude can be challenging.” A municipality may be eligible for the program if its disaster-related costs reach a threshold of three per cent of its own-purpose taxation levy.
