Bus rollover injures 25 in northwestern Ont., one person has ‘life-altering’ injuries

A bus carrying more than two dozen adults who were tree planting in Sioux Lookout, Ont., rolled over Sunday evening, injuring 25 people.

While most of the injuries were minor, at least one person “sustained life-altering injuries,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Monday afternoon.

The single-vehicle crash took place on Highway 516 in Sioux Lookout near Stain Lake around 6:45 p.m.

More than 30 passengers

“The single-vehicle collision involved a bus with over 30 adult passengers, who were tree-planting in the area this summer,” police said.

“As a result of the incident, 25 people were transported to hospitals for medical treatment. One person is reported to have sustained life-altering injuries at this time.”

In an email to CTV News, the OPP said there were 34 adults on board the bus at the time of the collision.

“We do not have an update on the person that suffered the life-altering injuries,” the email said.

“At this time, we do not have information on who they were working for. There is no word on any possible charges as the investigation is still continuing.”

Responding to the crash site were Northwest Emergency Medical Services, Sioux Lookout Fire Service, Ornge air ambulance, Ministry of Transportation, and OPP technical collision investigators and reconstructionists, as well as Sioux Lookout OPP.

“The investigation remains ongoing,” police said.
